Categories of computers

Understanding computers, for some, can be a difficult task. There are different computers, and they are divided into different categories. Here is a list of a few of them, and some definitions of the some of the components that go along with them.
- Handheld computer- these have a small keyboard or touch sensitive screen. They are designed to fit in an individual’s pocket, and run on batteries. This category can include: PDA’s, Smartphone’s, eBook readers, portable media, and portable game systems.
- Personal computers- also known as PC’s or microcomputers. These were created to meet an individuals needs. They typically have computing applications such as: word processing, photo editing, email and Internet. These are available as a desktop configuration or laptop.
- Desktop computer- this type of computer runs on power from an outlet. The keyboard is usually a separate component that is connected to a cable connected to the computer. These can be found in offices, schools, and homes. This type is also manufactured fairly economically, so they are highly picked choice for most offices and schools.
- Notebook- better known as a laptop. These are small, lightweight, and the screen, keyboard, storage are all in one unit. A laptop can run either on a power outlet or on the built in battery. These are a bit pricier, but still can be found pretty reasonably.
Some components of a personal computer:
- System unit- this includes the power supply, memory, and storage devices.
- Display device- this is referring to a separate display, which most desktop computers have.
- Storage device- this pertains to the hard disk drive, and the CD/DVD component.
- USB ports- these sockets on your computer are called USB ports, and they plug into external hard-drives, or USB flash drives.
- Sound cards & speakers- desktops have the speakers either built in or as a separate additional unit. The laptops speakers are built into the unit.
