The Wide Ranging Nature of Computers

“Computers” is a word that defines a broad selection of devices. While for some time the definition that came to most people’s mind was of an unshapely box that sat around a desk somewhere in the home or office, occasionally whirring, and quite useful for typing out documents, times have changed. The look, shape, and functionality of computers has also changed. Now, it’s impossible to find a new automobile for sale that doesn’t have a slew of computers beneath the hood. Wristwatches with altimeters and other extraneous features have become more computer and less a craftily assembled set of gears, as watches once were.

It’s not just in the consumer world that computers have become prevalent. Manufacturing industries have long made use of the “gee whiz” capabilities of accurate, non-tiring machines. From portion control “it’s” important to fill a 12 ounce bottle accurately with 12 ounces of fluid “ to auto part manufacture, the curves and sleek, aerodynamic designs of modern cars are enabled by intelligent machines. While a human programs the computers on the front end and takes care of any repair jobs, the computer takes it from there, and doesn’t complain when it gets no paid holiday. It’s easy to understand why a manufacturing plant operator would want to “employ” as many computers as possible: they’re accurate, non-tiring, never need a bathroom or lunch break, and will never ask for a pay raise.

As the new millennium gains age, computers will be found in ever more widespread use. A Tale of Two Tablets

The history of tablet computers goes back since the early days of computer technology, but it wasn’t until 2001 that Microsoft introduced its Tablet PC prototype. As it turns out, the commercial appeal for the devices in the following years was not abundant. However, the recent success of the Apple iPad has led to a resurrection of the tablet computer in 2010. Nearly every computer manufacturer has its own version of the tablet, with the iPad cornering the market. Two recently launched tablet computers are detailed below.

- Dell Inspiration Duo: The Inspiration Duo’s design is the most ingenious facet of the gadget. In one configuration, it appears as a 10-inch screen tablet with a wide screen; in another, it’s a netbook with a swivel screen. Having a tangible keyboard is a definite plus. At three pounds, the Duo is a little on the heavy side, but when considering its netbook capabilities, that is understandable. It includes Windows 7 software, but the powers while in tablet mode are lacking. The battery cannot be removed, and its life is extremely short. With some of the software bugs worked out, the Duo could improve. The $549.99 price tag is a little steep in its current incarnation, but the design gives it potential.

- Fusion Garage JooJoo: At nearly two-and-a-half pounds and sporting a 12-inch screen, the JooJoo is not the most portable tablet. It isn’t ugly, though, which may be its only upside. It only comes with 4GB of storage, but there isn’t much to do with the device anyway. However, it does include a camera and supports Flash websites – both of which the iPad cannot claim. Overall, the touch screen isn’t very reliable. And, as it stands, JooJoo can only really work for web browsing. Most of the JooJoo’s insufficiencies are promised to be refined with future software updates, but for now- and for $499 – it’s a bit unsatisfactory.

Categories of computers

Understanding computers, for some, can be a difficult task. There are different computers, and they are divided into different categories. Here is a list of a few of them, and some definitions of the some of the components that go along with them.
- Handheld computer- these have a small keyboard or touch sensitive screen. They are designed to fit in an individual’s pocket, and run on batteries. This category can include: PDA’s, Smartphone’s, eBook readers, portable media, and portable game systems.
- Personal computers- also known as PC’s or microcomputers. These were created to meet an individuals needs. They typically have computing applications such as: word processing, photo editing, email and Internet. These are available as a desktop configuration or laptop.
- Desktop computer- this type of computer runs on power from an outlet. The keyboard is usually a separate component that is connected to a cable connected to the computer. These can be found in offices, schools, and homes. This type is also manufactured fairly economically, so they are highly picked choice for most offices and schools.
- Notebook- better known as a laptop. These are small, lightweight, and the screen, keyboard, storage are all in one unit. A laptop can run either on a power outlet or on the built in battery. These are a bit pricier, but still can be found pretty reasonably.
Some components of a personal computer:
- System unit- this includes the power supply, memory, and storage devices.
- Display device- this is referring to a separate display, which most desktop computers have.
